Those leaked EOS D50 specs on Canon’s Chinese site? Real. The official announcement came today and everything tallies with what we saw on Friday. 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (with 1.6x crop factor), a big 3? LCD screen, Live View (for previewing images on the screen), ISO running up to 12800 (in a special, try-not-to-use-it hidden mode) and, possibly the most interesting, Canon’s new image processing chip, the DIGIC 4. In digicams, the two things which impact the picture quality (after the light has made it in through the lens) are the sensor and the image processor. The 50D is the first Canon camera to use the new DIGIC 4 chip, and it appears to be an incremental upgrade.

If you have a fast enough memory card (Compact Flash) then you’ll get a whopping 90 jpeg images in a single burst, at up to 6.3 fps. RAW shooters see a smaller improvement: you get 16 shots before the camera pauses for breath. The new DIGIC also includes face detection (up to 35 faces!) and in-camera vignetting controls with supported EF lenses. This last gets the rather fancy title of “Peripheral Illumination Correction”. There is also built-in sensor cleaning along with dust removal software which, in a fit of alliteration, Canon has named “Dust Delete Data Detection”. Other goodies include HDMI out and nine-point autofocus. The price for all these whizz-bang features? $1400.

Microsoft Corp. today spelled out new privacy tools in Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) that some have dubbed “porn mode” in a nod to the most-obvious use of a browser privacy mode. A privacy advocate applauded the move, calling it a “great step forward,” while rival browser builder Mozilla Corp. said it is working to add similar features to a future Firefox. Slated to appear in IE8 Beta 2, which Microsoft’s former chairman, Bill Gates, promised will release this month, the three new tools share the “InPrivate” name, which Microsoft filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office several weeks ago.

The most intriguing tool, and the one that has prompted the “porn mode” label, was dubbed “InPrivate Browsing” by Microsoft. When enabled, IE8 will not save browsing and searching history, cookies, form data and passwords; it also will automatically clear the browser cache at the end of the session. Other new tools will include “InPrivate Blocking” and “InPrivate Subscription,” which notifies users of third-party content that can track browsing history and subscribe to lists of sites to block, respectively. Microsoft will also tweak its existing “Delete Browsing History” by adding an option to preserve bookmarked sites’ cookies even when all others are erased.

Good news for Google, Yahoo, MSN, and maybe even Cuil – search engine use is on the rise, according to a report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. While it may seem like everyone has Googled themselves, Twittered some inane tidbit about their day, or shared a little too much via Facebook status updates, some people apparently only use the Internet to send useless forwards and check the weather. The ranks of the Internet illiterate are dwindling, however. The number of people who regularly use online search engines is up 69 percent from January 2002, the report said. E-mail use increased about 15 percent in the same time period, but e-mail has always been the most popular app on the Internet, wrote report author Deborah Fallows.

Among daily Internet activities, 60 percent use e-mail, 49 percent use online search, 39 percent check news, 30 percent check weather, 29 percent research a hobby, 28 percent surf the Web for fun, and 13 percent use social networking sites. This is the second time Pew has seen a jump in search engine use – the first being a 10 percent increase in late 2005 when there was a lot of media buzz around search engines, including the Google IPO. What accounts for the jump this time around? Fallows suggested that at this point, Internet users can find a high-performing, site-specific search engine on any Web site “that is worth its salt.” Increased access to broadband and the quality of search returns has also contributed to the rise in use, she wrote.
