China has overtaken the United States in online presence as more Chinese citizens use the worldwide web. The largest country in terms of population is now also world’s largest Internet population. The China Internet Network Information Centre reported Friday that the country had 253 million netizens as of end of June, up by 56 percent from last year. In comparison, research company Nielsen Online reported 223.1 million Internet users in the U.S. in June.

However, China has only 19 percent of its population enjoying Internet access, far off from the U.S.’s 71 per cent and the global average of 21 percent. A majority of China’s cyber citizens are high school students at 39 million of the 43 million new netizens added in 2007. Ages below 30 comprise 69 percent of total web users. The government closely monitors the country’s Internet usage, however, online commerce, video sharing and other businesses among Chinese have been proliferating in the web.

Google opened its website Knol to the public on Wednesday, allowing people to write about their areas of expertise under their bylines in a twist on encyclopedia Wikipedia, which allows anonymity. “We are deeply convinced that authorship — knowing who wrote what — helps readers trust the content,” said Cedric DuPont, product manager for Knol. The name of the service is a play on an individual unit of knowledge, DuPont said, and entries on the public website, knol.google.com, are called “knols.” Google conducted a limited test of the site beginning in December. Knol has publishing tools similar to single blog pages. But unlike blogs, Knol encourages writers to reduce what they know about a topic to a single page that is not chronologically updated.

“What we want to get away from is ‘this last voice wins’ model which is very difficult if you are a busy professional,” DuPont said. Google wants to rank entries by popularity to encourage competition. For example, the first knol on “Type 1 Diabetes” is by Anne Peters, director of the University of Southern California’s Clinical Diabetes Programs. As other writers publish on diabetes, Google plans to rank related pages according to user ratings, reviews and how often people refer to specific pages, DuPont said.  Knol focuses on individual authors or groups of authors in contrast to Wikipedia’s subject entries, which are updated by users and edited behind the scenes. DuPont said that rather than competing with Wikipedia, Knol may end up serving as a primary source of authoritative information for use with Wikipedia articles.

Just a week and a half ago WordPress for the iPhone was announced with a pretty killer screencast detailing what you could do with it. Tuesday morning it finally showed up on the app store (download it here). The good news is that it’s very enjoyable to use and quite capable for creating posts on the go. The bad news? You’ve got to have an iPhone or iPod Touch to take advantage of it.

The key benefit to using this app is writing and publishing quick posts on the go. What I found after using it, though, is that it offers up far more to the discerning user who wants to use it as a very powerful publishing tool. You can upload photos either from your existing library or snap a quick shot with your phone’s camera. I can see this leading to many food-related photo blogs. Also nice is that whatever you write can be saved on your phone, so you can work on dozens of posts at once and only publish when you want. There’s also a great preview function that will show you what your post will look like without kicking you off to Safari.

I successfully connected two Wordpress.com hosted blogs to the app in just a minute or two, although I ran into problems connecting my personal hosted blog that uses the software install from WordPress.org. It’s worth noting you’ll need version 2.5.1 or higher to hook it up to a hosted blog, although updating to the recently released 2.6 is definitely worth it for all those extra publishing goodies.

Unfortunately there are some serious shortcomings to the iPhone that bring the app down a notch. If you’re used to adding links to your posts there’s not a lot you can do without copy and paste. HTML code is fully supported, so as long as you’re good with your href tagging (which is brutal on the iPhone’s built-in keyboard) you’ll be able to add links from memory just fine.

Another quibble of mine is that drafts created on your computer won’t show up in your post queue on the iPhone app, meaning you won’t be able to start a post on your computer and finish it on the road. Ideally, future revisions will include better shortcuts for adding links and some support for fetching drafts from the cloud.

Hardcore users with a lot of readers will also be pining for some sort of comment management feature in future revisions. As it stands, you’ll have to log in to your WordPress dashboard from Safari and administrate them from there, which isn’t terrible, but it would be far more enjoyable to write and manage in one place.

All in all, it’s off to a great start, and compared to competitor TypePad, which had its app available at the launch of the app store, WordPress is just as full featured and opens up mobile blogging to the millions of WordPress.com and WordPress.org users.

FUNNY POST OF THE WEEK

I am glad our server’s are located at a data centre, not like the company below :

From: —- ——–
Sent: Monday, May 5, 2008 4:37 PM
To: Everyone
Subject: Server Room Access

Hi all.

As you all are aware, we have new tenants that have moved into
the 2nd floor suites. The access to the server room is now via
the women’s bathroom.

There will be a sign on the woman’s door that can be changed
from OPEN to CLOSED and vice versa.

Should you need to enter the server room, please change the sign
to CLOSED. Once you are done, please change it back to OPEN.

Once you enter the bathroom, you will be able to access the
server room via the handicapped stall. Please close the stall
door prior to entry, just in case someone doesn’t see that the
bathroom is closed.

I know this isn’t ideal, but if we adhere to this protocol, I
don’t think anyone will be disrupted.

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions.

An Australian woman known as the world’s oldest blogger has died at the age of 108.

Olive Riley, from Woy Woy around 50 miles north of Sydney, started blogging in February of 2007. In her final post she talked about her declining health but also said she still sings a happy song every day..

In her blog posts Riley told stories from her life during the two world wars, about raising three children on her own and working as a station cook in the outback. Riley attracted a global audience with her blog, The Life of Riley and a number of videos posted on YouTube with her talking and singing.

Riley was 12 years older than the world’s previous oldest blogger, Spain’s Marie Amelia. Riley was born in 1899 and would have been 109 in October.

“She enjoyed the notoriety — it kept her mind fresh,” her great-grandson Darren Stone of Brisbane told local newspapers. “She had people communicating with her from as far away as Russia and America on a continual basis, not just once in a while.”

In her final and 74th post on June 26 Riley talked about moving into a nursing home and her declining health. “How the days have flown, even though I’ve been in bed most of the time. I still feel weak, and can’t shake off that bad cough.”

Goes to show, Your never too old to blog
